Under the EU-funded project “Reinforcing the Capacities of the Government of Georgia in Border and Migration Management” IOM organized a study visit to France from 17-19 May 2016 for six forensic document examiners from the Forensic-Criminalistic Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. Although possessing established expertise in document examination the experts had never previously had exposure to the factory production of secure documents such as passports and the production of security paper used in banknotes.
Georgian delegation observes document checks at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
The French company Oberthur hosted visits to two of its production facilities in Brittany as well as providing information concerning security features in paper and plastic at its Paris headquarters.
Additionally the French embassy in Tbilisi facilitated a visit to observe the extensive challenges faced by the French authorities dealing with fraudulent documents at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Mr. Giorgi Beridze, Quality Assurance Manager at the the Forensic-Criminalistic Department, commented that the visit provided “extremely valuable additional knowledge to add to the section’s existing expertise”.
